Video: 800 HP All-Electric Mustang Sets Record At Texas Mile

Feast your eyes on the Zombie 222, an electrically powered ’68 Mustang fastback whose moniker stands for “2 motors, 2 controllers, and too fast”. The brainchild of Mitch Medford and John Wayland, who together run Bloodshed Motors, the Zombie 222 is the embodiment of the company’s mission to bring zero-compromise, ultra high performance electric vehicles from the drawing board to the tarmac.

Medford first got interested in electric performance after having watched the Tesla Roadster leave its internal combustion counterpart, the Lotus Elise, for dead in a Top Gear segment. Realizing that an untapped market was about to sprout up, Medford stumbled upon a video of Wayland’s 1972 Datsun 1200 while doing some research. Visually unassuming, the 1200’s original drivetrain was replaced with two 9-inch electric motors, which is enough to get this Datsun from 0-60 mph in a neck-snapping 1.8 seconds and through the quarter mile in 10.3 seconds. Watch it in action here:

“The power and the numbers and performance that that car was putting out was almost unimaginable,” Medford recalled in an interview with The Verge. So he fired off an email to Wayland with a proposal to start a company that builds world-class all-electric performance drivetrains and stuffs them into iconic vehicles. But in a world where 700 horsepower sedans roll off showroom floors every day, Medford knew he’d have to do something special to get enthusiasts’ attention.

In 1967, Carroll Shelby was called in by Goodyear to their San Angelo, Texas, testing facility to help the team test (and promote) their new Thunderbolt tires. Shelby decided that rather than bring a standard GT500 Mustang, he’d swap in a race-prepped 427 motor, creating the first “Super Snake” Shelby Mustang. After 500 miles of testing in one day, Shelby managed an average speed of 142 miles per hour, and topped out at 170 according to legend, making the Super Snake the fastest first generation Mustang in the world.

3So Medford decided to take Shelby’s record as a challenge, and built a ’68 Mustang with a 1.1 megawatt battery pack, capable of producing up to 1400 horsepower, with the intention of beating Shelby’s record at the Texas Mile. An event held twice a year in Beeville, Texas at the Chase Field Industrial Complex, the Texas Mile is where enthusiasts are invited to see what speeds their performance cars are capable of achieving within 5280 feet.

5The team made an agenda – they decided there were two records they wanted to break at the event. The first was for the fastest electric street car at the Texas Mile, a title held by John Metric, the president of the National Electric Drag Racing Association, who reached 155 miles per hour during a run in 2012 in an electrically-motivated Pontiac Fiero.

The second, although not an official record, offered perhaps even more bragging rights – beating Shelby’s 170 mph top speed figure.

See the Bloodshed Motors Zombie 222 in action at the Texas Mile in the video above and find out if they were able rise to the challenge of besting Carroll Shelby’s decades-ago record in first generation Mustang.
