Ford is advocating a new way forward with its EcoBoost engines. Utilizing turbochargers and direct injection technology, Ford is getting more power out of a smaller package, which often results in a fuel economy improvement as well. Ford has pledged to put EcoBoost engines under the hood of all of its cars, but they are naturally starting with the higher-end models like the 7-passenger Ford Flex.
As it turns out, this-not-a-minivan minivan packs a serious performance punch without any modifications. But give that EcoBoost a new tune, and you’ve suddenly got a 13-second mommy-mobile that can beat up Camaros, as the following video shows.
It might surprise you to learn that yes, people are buying EcoBoost Ford Flex’s, and they are modifying them to go faster. But they’re not going crazy, as a simple tune can provide big power gains. This particular EcoBoost Flex was tuned by Livernois Motorsports, a name you might be familiar with on these pages.
The Livernois tune woke the Ford Flex’s EcoBoost engine up across the whole power curve, with maximum gains of 47 horsepower and 83 ft-lbs of torque. That was good enough to put down 325 horsepower and 360 ft-lbs of torque down at the wheels. For those keeping score at home, that’s a little less horsepower, but a lot more torque, than a stock Coyote 5.0 engine. Depending on how aggressive the tune is, it can take the Flex down the ¼ mile in anywhere from 13.4 to 14.0 seconds. Have the same engine in your EcoBoost Taurus SHO? Well you’re looking at mid-12’s.
But there is something special about watching a 7-passenger not-a-minivan beat up a new Camaro on the drag strip, don’t you think?
