Though the concept of a burnout is deceptively simple, performing a perfect burnout takes practice…and sometimes a little mechanical assistance, especially in manual transmission equipped cars. Drag racers have long used line lock systems to lock up the front brakes of a car while leaving the rear end open, allowing for perfect, consistent burnouts. It’s a feature that has never been offered on a production vehicle…until the 2015 Mustang, that is.

The 2015 Mustang GT will offer customers this exclusive feature when it goes on sale this fall, with one particular kind of Mustang driver in mind.

Ford added this feature to benefit weekend warriors who keep their Mustang in their garage, but aren’t afraid to whip it out for a few runs down the drag strip. The Mustang has a long history with drag racing, and many an old six-banger has been converted into a formidable drag monster by backyard mechanics. Ford wants to make life a little easier with this line lock feature, allowing for perfect burnouts every time.

The system is all made possible through the Track Apps feature, and the use of software. Since modern ABS and traction control systems can literally control each wheel independently getting a factory line-lock system was only a matter of software programming. Combine this with launch control which will also be available and drag racing just got a little easier for some out there.

Line-lock helps drivers warm up their tires to provide maximum grip off the line, though it may also help reduce the number of burnout-related accidents Mustangs suffer every year. If there’s one thing the Mustang has always been good at, it’s shredding tires, and the seamless integration of drag racing technology into a production car has given the 2015 Mustang claim to an industry first.
