Our friend John Urist and the team at Hellion Turbo are no strangers when it comes to Mustangs and making big power. Urist and the crew have one of the fastest S550 Mustang street cars around – that being Melissa Urist’s 2015 Mustang GT – which is pushing nearly 1,500 horsepower at the rear wheels. And of course, we have John Urist’s 2016 Mustang Street Outlaw drag car, which is powered by a Modular Motorsports Racing (MMR) Gen X billet Coyote engine (full details on that engine here).
The combination is backed by one nasty 98mm turbocharger from Precision Turbo & Engine, and uses an array of additional odds and ends from Turbosmart USA. John’s S550 is the one showcased in the video above, making more than 2,000 horsepower at the rear wheels and spinning the drum on the dyno at nearly 8,000 RPM.
As such, when the car debuted late last July, we knew we could expect big things from Urist and the folks at Hellion Turbo. It’s incredible to see just exactly how much power Urist’s Street Outlaw S550 Mustang is making with the new MMR billet Coyote engine. We’ve seen this Mustang in person in the past – both at last year’s NMRA World Finals in Bowling Green, Kentucky, as well as this year’s NMRA Spring Break Shootout in Bradenton, Florida, and the car has performed flawlessly.
Speaking of which, it’s only the beginning of the season as of this writing – and we can’t wait to see how Hellion Turbo plans to run its 2016 Mustang in the Street Outlaw class during this year’s NMRA season. Rest assured, we’ll keep you in the loop.
