Todd Holdren’s 1953 Buick might not be a typical Autocross car, but it is cool as all get out.

In an ever-changing world, you must adapt. The Goodguys Rod & Custom organization realizes that, and is not one to rest on their laurels. That is why they have a great announcement for you guys on the West Coast. According to the press release we received, “Autocross racing is second to none, and we are continuing to build our catalog of amazing events! The field will be open to anyone wanting to compete, and Saturday will be a qualifying day for the Shootout. The action will start at 8:00 a.m. and run until noon. It will resume at 1:00 p.m. and end for the day at 5:00 p.m. Sunday morning will again see qualifying until noon, and then at noon, the top 24 cars will be listed.

At 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, those 24 cars will run the first round of qualifiers to reveal the 20 fastest cars. Then, at 2:00 p.m., those 20 cars will run a second round of qualifying which will narrow the field to 16 cars.

At 3:00 p.m., the single-elimination challenge will have those 16 cars run from a Pro ladder to determine the winner. By the end of the day, there will be a crowned winner of the West Coast Muscle Car Shootout presented by Fuel Curve! Not only that, but the top four 1972 or older cars will go directly to the Duel in the Desert Finals in Scottsdale, in November.

Brian Hobaugh enjoys racing in the confined space and in front of fans.

As steeped as we are in the hobby, we’ve never really had the opportunity to get a lot of seat time at an autocross event, so we asked Brian Hobaugh, one the Goodguys leading competitors why he does it. “I really enjoy the Goodguys autocross events, because they offer great competition, large spectator crowds cheering us on, and the aspect of racing in a confined track. The West Coast Shootout is even more exciting, as it is set up like a bracket. As long as you keep winning, you keep racing to the final.”

As tempting a Brian makes it sound, the autocross participants also have a little more incentive to compete. Not only do the winners get bragging rights for the year, the winners of the inaugural West Coast Muscle Car Shootout presented by Fuel Curve will go home with cash and gift certificates. In case you were interested, First Place wins $1,000, Second wins $750, Third gets $500, and Fourth Place gets $250.
