The Need for Speed videogame franchise is the most venerable virtual racing series in the gaming pantheon. The first Need for Speed game was released in 1994, which means next years the series will celebrate its 20th birthday. Dreamworks has been charged with producing a movie based on the gaming franchise to celebrate, and recently cast Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul as the lead.
The second-most important role, that of the hero’s main car, has also been filled. A Shelby GT500 will be Paul’s ride of choice when the movie hits the streets in March of 2014.
With a custom widebody kit, 22-inch rims, and a supercharged 662 horsepower engine, the Shelby GT500 will be Paul’s go-to race car in a movie that is sure to employ plenty of car chases and explosive crashes. Paul plays a former street racer fresh out of prison, who somehow comes into a $55,000 Shelby and enters a cross-country race to get revenge on those who wronged him. Sounds totally plausible -right?
The movie’s release date, March 14th, is a month before the Mustang’s 50th anniversary. If the movie goes over well, it could be the start of a new series that could eventually involve the 2015 Mustang. A custom Ford F-450 will also be starring alongside the Mustang, and could even be a scene stealer, though we know which car is the real star.
