Carroll Shelby’s legacy will endure for decades as an American performance icon that has created some of the world’s most memorable automobiles. While the Shelby Cobra kept competitors at bay on the streets, the Shelby Daytona took the battle to the race track, winning the GT class at Le Mans in 1964 and capturing the 1965 FIA World Championship title.
In celebration of the 50th anniversary of that important win for the red, white, and blue, Shelby American is building the 50th Anniversary Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe. Just 50 examples will be built, and they’re “affordable” only relative to the original cars.
Just six Shelby Daytona Coupes managed to accomplish so much for American motorsports, and each one now prized at several million dollars (though some owners still race the hell out of it). The base price for these aluminum continuation coupes begins at $349,995, or at the “bargain” price of $179,995 if you opt for a fiberglass body instead. No drivetrain is included, though for an additional cost Shelby will add in a Hi-Po 289 V8, and each vehicle will be serialized and added to the Shelby registry.
The Anniversary Daytona Coupes will be built using the original blueprints from one of the original six cars. While each Daytona was slightly different, we don’t think too many would-be buyers will complain, as the dream of ever owning a real Daytona Coupe borders on delusion. The new Daytona Coupes have been updated with a stronger frame and modern Wilwood disc brakes, but for the most part they’re faithful to the original design. It’s never going to be an original Daytona Coupe, so why bother cheaping out on the upgrades?
Some people might opt a cheaper kit car, but others have to have that Shelby stamp of approval. And who are we to argue, so long as it keeps the Shelby name and legacy alive for future generations to drool over.
