Rumor: Is The Next GT500 Coming in 2017-18 With A Twin Turbo V6?

Yes we know it’s the GT350 but there’s no actual GT500 images out there -yet.

With the introduction of a four-cylinder, turbocharged engine on the 2015 Ford Mustang, the Blue Oval has opened the floodgates to a whole host of options for its muscle car going forward. In fact, the 2.3 liter EcoBoost engine has been a major reason why Mustang sales have skyrocketed in the last year, with almost as many sales so far in 2015 as both the Dodge Challenger and Chevy Camaro combined. We think it’s safe to say that the four-cylinder Mustang is a big hit, and with the introduction of a 600 horsepower, twin-turbo V6 Ford GT, all options are on the table, including a V6-powered Shelby GT500.

Such an idea would have been sacrilege a few years ago, when gas prices were low and engines like the 5.0 V8 were hot hot hot. But the world of 2015 is much different from the world of just five years ago, and most Ford fans have welcomed the 3.5 liter EcoBoost V6-powered 2016 Ford GT with open arms and unabashed enthusiasm. And who could blame them? Despite having two fewer cylinders than we’d expect from such a supercar, most people couldn’t be happier with the GT as it is.

fordecoboost-1000x667Then there’s the four-cylinder EcoBoost Mustang, which has brought younger buyers into showrooms especially in places like Southern California, where Mustang sales are up over 110% compared to last year. Offering over 300 horsepower and 30 MPG and at a much lower MSRP than the V8-powered GT, it strikes the perfect balance between performance and affordability. It’s not like Shelby owners have to make due without a V8 options either, as the Shelby GT350 and GT350R cradle Ford’s most powerful naturally aspirated production engine ever built between its shock towers.

While nothing is set in stone, it doesn’t seem like it’d be too difficult to swap the Ford GT’s 600 horsepower V6 under the hood of the 6th-generation Mustang. Rumors have been swirling for months that a twin turbo EcoBoost V6 is coming to the Mustang lineup in the years to come. If it’s a Shelby named model with Ford GT horsepower, it’ll be down on power compared to the 662 horsepower Shelby GT500 of the previous generation, but if Ford can shed some weight, the nearly instant and incredibly flat torque curve of the twin-turbo EcoBoost engine could provide the same kind of thrilling driving experience that Shelby has always been known for. Could we also see the paddle shift twin clutch trans from the GT, or some variant of it? That would be icing on the cake and might truly propel a EcoBoost V6 Mustang to legendary status.

If Ford fans can accept a V6 GT Supercar and a four-cylinder Mustang, is a V6 GT500 really such a far-fetched idea? Would you call it the GT500 or something else?
