The Pirelli World Challenge is one of the best places to watch Mustangs duke it out with international competitors in a road course setting. That’s especially true for this past weekend’s events at Barber Motorsports Park in Alabama, when big crashes and big thrills were on hand for the group of Ford drivers fighting for a podium finish.
When the smoke cleared, it was Jack Roush Jr. who had made his way to the front of the pack to finish in second place on Saturday, marking his first podium finish in the World Challenge series. But Sunday’s race was a different beast altogether, with a first-lap crash taking out four of the top Mustang contenders…including Roush.
Saturday’s second place finish for Jack Roush Jr. is a big win for the Pirelli newbie, who’s been looking for a win since the series kicked off last month. His second-place victory was hard fought, slotting between Mark Williams in his Kia Optima and Jack Baldwin’s Porsche Cayman S. Meanwhile, Tony Buffomante would claw his way from a 12th-place start to finish fourth overall on Saturday, moving up some eight places during the race.
Sunday was a more dismal affair though, as a crash on the first turn on the first lap took out four of the major Mustang players. Roush, Buffomante, Dean Martin, and Alex Udell all ended up crashing into each other, taking themselves (as well as an Aston Martin) out of contention in the very early stages. To be honest, it’s a bit embarrassing, and a major setback for Mustang fans hoping this was the beginning of a comeback.
There’s still plenty of races left to make up this serious deficit, but the Mustang crew has their work cut out for them, that’s for sure.
