If you go to a Ford dealership these days, you’ll see two vehicles dominating the dealer lot; F-150 pickups, and Focus compacts. These are Ford’s two biggest sellers by a wide margin, reflecting a new mindset in America where most consumers want either a big, versatile truck or a small, fuel efficient car. Yet not that long ago, there was one car that dominated every Ford dealership lot, large and small.
We are talking of course about the Mustang, in particular the Fox-body Mustangs built between 1979 and 1993. This was the Second Coming of the Mustang, with sales skyrocketing to over 2.2 million units in that 14 year span, averaging annual sales of more than 150,000 units per year. But don’t take our word for it, just check out these photos posted over at the Corral.net forums if you don’t believe us.
These nostalgic pictures from the 80s and early 90s show various Ford dealerships packed to the gills with Mustangs from that era. Parked front and center, multiple rows deep, these pictures reflect an era where performance was making a comeback, and the Mustang was one of Ford’s best-selling vehicles. While most of these pictures show the classic “four-eyed” Mustangs, all the way through the aerodynamic redesign Mustangs stayed strong sellers on Ford lots.
These days, most Ford dealers have just a handful of Mustangs on their lots, and they are rarely up front. Instead, dealers are putting the 40 mpg Focus compact side-by-side with the new F-150, and many lots have less than 10 Mustangs in stock. These pictures remind us of days long past, when Mustangs dominated the street and sales numbers. These days Ford can’t even break 100,000 Mustang sales, as tastes among buyers have definitely shifted.
Ah, the good old days.
