While there have been rumors that the modern Mustang might one day feature all-wheel drive, there were definitely some prototype classic Mustangs built with the unique Ferguson Formula Four-Wheel Drive system. Somewhere in the Netherlands there is an extremely rare 1970 Mustang convertible fitted with this system for sale.
Created by a company called Ferguson Research — supported by Harry Ferguson of Massey Ferguson tractors fame — this all-wheel-drive conversion involved the installation of a planetary front differential, which used clutches to maintain full-time AWD. In the 1965 Mustang used as a prototype, this system sent 37 percent of available torque to the front wheels and 63 percent to the rear wheels.
It would seem the 1970 model in question was converted with this system, but hasn’t gotten much further. Once 351-powered, this machine currently lacks an engine. Though it has just over 22,000 miles on the clock, the convertible looks like its been driven through the bottom of a muddy river and could definitely use a complete restoration. It is allegedly a red with a black leather interior, but you wouldn’t be able to tell by looking at it.
In any event, the current owner, who has owned it for 27 years, doesn’t have time for the project, so someone could score a really rare Mustang. It even has an active Dutch license plate, even though it’s clearly not driveable.
