Few would have ever believed that the legendary Carroll Shelby would build a 1,000 horsepower Mustang. Yet even fewer can imagine why a man with the skills and wherewithal to do it hadn’t made it happen yet. Thankfully, Shelby unveiled the 1,000 horsepower Shelby 1000 at this year’s New York Auto Show, promising those who pony up over $200,000 a true blue 1,000 horsepower Shelby.
Mustangs Daily reports that even though the debut of the Shelby 1000 was less than a month ago, production of these super Mustangs is already under way.
Available in 950 horsepower and 1,100 horsepower packages, the Shelby 1000 takes the 2013 Shelby GT500 and cranks the dial up to 11. Sure, 650 horsepower sounds impressive, but next to the 1,000 horsepower of the Shelby 1000, it sounds downright paltry.
Of course the modifications required to add over 400 horsepower to a stock GT500 are extensive, from the Ford 9-inch rear end to the beefy suspension and massive brakes. Just 100 of these cars will be built to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Shelby Cobra, and the post-title package starts at $149,995 (not including the cost of a GT500). We’re sure Shelby won’t have any trouble selling them all.
