At the beginning of July, we interviewed Bad Bart Tobener to talk about his NMRA season and how he’s been at the top of the heap in the Edelbrock Renegade class in 2014; with the exception of wins by Brian Mitchell at Bradenton and Scott Grove at Commerce (after Tobener kissed the wall) it’s been all Tobener, all the time.
This past weekend, he wrapped up his first-ever Renegade championship with a number-one-qualifier effort and event win at the NMRA/NMCA Super Bowl of Street Legal Drag Racing in Joliet, Illinois, during one of the best racing weekends of his life. Despite high-double-digit event wins over the course of his racing career this is Tobener’s first championship.
With the help of ProCharger, Tobener has been able to set the class record in 2014 along with breaking the coveted 7-second barrier, something that the Renegade class has been trying to do for quite some time. Using the F-1C-10.5 supercharger, he currently holds the elapsed time and MPH records in the class with best marks of 7.943 at 173.47 MPH, both achieved at the Maryland International Raceway stop on the tour. He’s the only competitor in the class to break the 7-second mark to date.
During the Super Bowl event, Tobener not only qualified at the top of the class – his fourth top qualifier in a row – he went on to win the class over the toughest competition Renegade has to offer and then topped off the weekend by winning the deciding round in the Super Bowl portion of the event.
“It feels real good to be the champion; now I feel like I need to accomplish something new. Brian Mitchell said he’s coming for me in Bowling Green. I have a whole page of upgrades to do but didn’t want to mess with my combination; now that I’ve won the title I can,” he says.
From what we understand, the engine that failed in Commerce had higher compression than the current piece, and he’ll be returning to that configuration prior to Bowling Green. The car will also be wearing a new set of cylinder heads from Wilson Manifolds, and he’s planning to test the new ProCharger F-1A in addition.
