Louisiana native Paul “P.B.” Candies, who reset the all-time Super Stock elapsed time standard last year with his Cobra Jet Ford Mustang, bettered his own marks over the weekend at the NHRA’s Cajun SPORTSNationals, getting his season off a record-setting start.

During qualifying at the No Problem Raceway Park in Belle Rose, Candies unleashed a 7.809-second blast from his 2010 Mustang, which ultimately qualified him fifth in the Super Stock order at -.991-seconds under the FSS/A index.

Last September, Candies made what was then the quickest pass in history at the sport’s most prestigious drag race, the NHRA U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis, when he clocked a 7.859 at 170.02 miles per hour during class eliminations — eclipsing the 7.880 record he’d set before that at an IHRA Pro-Am in Baton Rouge.

Candies record a 7.88 on his 7.82 in an opening round victory, but came up on the losing end of a second round match with many-time champion David Rampy, as he was forced under his 7.91 dial with a 7.86.

Candies’ gorgeous Candies Motorsports Mustang, which began life as a real factory-produced Cobra Jet, but has since undergone some modifications in the chassis and power train to bring it up to Super Stock standards. Under the hood is a 5.4L small block Ford powerplant with a 4.0L supercharger on top.

Candies then relies on a Hughes Performance GM95 Pro-V series 9-inch torque converter to help put the power to the tires.
