Once upon a time Ford built a car called the LSC under the Lincoln brand. Based on a modified Fox-body Mustang platform, the LSC Mark VII was, for a time, one of the top luxury performance coupes in America. The Mark VII gave way to the Mark VIII, a more-technology advanced car, and one that was ultimately phased out. Since then, Lincoln has lacked a two-door, rear-wheel drive sports car. That’s a damn shame if you ask us, and if you’ll recall a certain writer recently called on Ford to build a Mustang-based Lincoln once again.

Ford Inside News reports that sources within the Blue Oval say that there is serious discussion regarding a Mustang-based Lincoln sports car to serve as a halo vehicle for the revitalized brand.

It is no secret that Lincoln has been struggling to attract buyers, and Ford has pledged serious reinvestment into the lackluster luxury marque. Among the rumors filtering out is serious consideration of a rear-drive sports car based on the Mustang. The “One Ford” plan has called for a series of global platforms that can be used to underpin multiple models.

Since the Mustang is unique to its platform, it makes sense to this writer that Ford would want to extend this platform to underpin more vehicles…including a Lincoln flagship and a next-gen Falcon for Australia. With the next-generation Mustang due out sometime in 2014 as a 2015 model, the timeline would align with the planned unveiling of many new Lincoln models. We’re certainly hoping for a sporty Lincoln in the vein of the LSC…though perhaps a four-door, rear-drive sedan might be better suited for the luxury market? You tell us.
