With less than a year until the 2015 Mustang shows up on dealership lots, speculation of details about what the next-generation of Ford pony cars will or won’t be is going into high gear. While so far rumors have suggested that Americans will get three engine options, and that the Shelby GT500 would carry on going forward, a new set of rumors turns much of what we thought we knew on its head.
Over at The Truth About Cars, deep-seated moles in the Ford company, or their suppliers, have supposedly spilled the beans that insist the Shelby GT500 ends with the 2014 model. Going forward, the SVT Cobra will make a triumphant return. Availability of the EcoBoost engines, that seems questionable too, at least on American soil.
All we can say for certain is that the S550 Mustang either will, or won’t, get a four-cylinder EcoBoost engine for the American market. Some rumors say that only Europe will get the four-banger, while other rumors say it will be the base engine for America, making just 270 horsepower. TTAC says that the 2015 Mustang will have the 270 hp EcoBoost, as well as the current V-6 and V-8 engine options.
An independent rear suspension is pretty much a sure thing judging from the spy pics, but the real bombshell is that the Shelby GT500 will be replaced by the SVT Cobra. Gone too (according to the rumors) will be the supercharged 5.8 liter engine, replaced by a naturally-aspirated 5.2 liter V-8 with no engine cover, reportedly for hood clearance and meeting European regulations. Horsepower wasn’t mentioned, but speculators suggest that a naturally-aspirated Cobra 5.2 could easily deliver 500 horsepower.
So what do you make of these latest Mustang rumors? Is the Horsepower war over? Ford won afterall, with the current GT500 5.8 supercharged at 662 hp, so what else is there to do?
