Mustang Challenge Racers Gear Up, Gang Up for SCCA World Challenge

Richard Golinello of Oldsmar, FL, will join a number of former Mustang Challenge racers that are migrating to the GTS class in SCCA’s World Challenge series this year. Unlike some of his contemporaries from that series, Golinello will be bringing a new ride to the season opener on the streets of St. Petersburg from March 25-27.

After seeing the newly-announced Mustang Boss 302S at the Performance Racing Industry show last month, he was sold. “When they said that this car would set the benchmark for the GTS class, I knew I couldn’t build a faster car,” says Golinello. “Why try to build my 2008 FR500S to compete with it, when the BOSS 302S will already be so strong?”

Golinello finished in the Top Ten for the 2010 Mustang Challenge series and is ready to take on the GTS class of World Challenge. Both track testing and local club racing have kept Golinello in tune.

Long Road Racing will continue to prep the R&C Motorsports Mustang with Crew Chief Mark Canup at the helm. With an extended season, compared to the Mustang Challenge series, Golinello’s R&C Motorsports is also teaming up with Winkler Racing this season to share transportation duties.

The inaugural event for the 2011 World Challenge series takes place at the temporary 14-turn, 1.8-mile road course in St. Petersburg, FL. As many as a half dozen Mustang entrants are expected to contest the series this year.

Later races will see the series head to Long Beach, CA, Miller Motorsports Park in UT, Mosport International Raceway in Canada, Mid-Ohio and Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, CA. Two additional events remain to be announced.
