Murillo, SCT Dominate With NMCA, NMRA Championships

SCT Performance-backed racer Mike Murillo has accomplished what few have during the 2011 campaign. After finishing second to Conrad Scarry in the NMRA Pro Outlaw 10.5 championship chase last season, the likeable veteran from San Antonio, Texas hit the road this spring with the intent of capturing not only the NMRA Pro Outlaw 10.5 crown, but the NMCA Super Street title, as well.

Murillo began the year with a win at the Bradenton NMCA opener and a runner-up to Ed Rice in Georgia, before capturing his first victory of the season in the NMRA at Atco Raceway and another at the NMRA World Finals in Bowling Green last weekend. After the NMCA triumph in Florida, he went to capture victories in Maryland, Bowling Green, and Michigan’s Milan Dragway. Along the way, the SCT Performance Mustang scorched the record books in both series, setting the NMCA standard at 6.684 and the NMRA record at 6.638 and 217.45 MPH.

Murillo fended off a last-race challenge from Tim Essick for the NMRA crown on the final day of the season as he advanced enough rounds to secure the title, ultimately edging Essick in the final round. With the NMCA Super Street title already in hand, Murillo has one final shot to capture another event win at the season-ending World Street Finals this weekend in Indianapolis.
