By far the biggest and most surprising reveal at the 2015 North American International Auto Show in Detroit was an all-new, carbon fiber Ford GT powered by a 600+ horsepower EcoBoost V6. But that was just a concept car technically, even though Blue Oval executives promised from the start that this car would see production, in more or less the same form.
True to its word, the new Ford GT is shaping up to be a sexy and powerful contender that will see the Blue Oval squaring off against the likes of Ferrari and Lamborghini for the attention of wealthy enthusiasts.
A stunning marvel of technological prowess and historical legend, the new Ford GT will be limited to just 250 units, with pricing expected to be in the $400,000 range. Ford is keeping a lot of performance specifications, including the official power output, under wraps for now. A special ordering system that favors previous Ford GT buyers has also been put in place in a bid to avoid the scammers who merely want to resell the car at a higher cost.
While the new Ford GT is no doubt a way for the Blue Oval to bring in some big bucks, it’s also an exercise in asserting itself over the famed 24 Hours of Le Mans once again. Back in 1966 a trio of Ford GTs embarrassed Enzo Ferrari at Le Mans in one of the most legendary victories in motorsports history, and Ford is looking to take the checkered flag at the Circuit de la Sarthe at least one more time.
And it will do so with incredible style.
