When it comes to modifying Mustangs, not many offer the same performance options for the money as a Fox Body. But when dealing with these older models, there are some definite improvements needed to make it the ultimate ride. Luckily, with the vast array of offerings from LateModelRestoration.com, building a Fox to the performance standard you crave is not only possible, it’s easier than ever.
Take for example, the Fox Mustang owned by Late Model sales rep Lee Cox. Lately, there has been quite a bit of work going on with this vehicle, including adding Eibach Pro Kit lowering springs, UPR control arms, and Tokico shocks and struts, to make it into the ultimate “daily driven road race Fox” with the latest upgrade featured on LateModelRestoration.com being the installation of performance brakes. Whether you’re thinking of doing a similar upgrade to your Fox project or are just interested in a pretty neat upgrade with new Late Model Restoration parts, this three-part upgrade is definitely worth the read.
first part of Cox’s Fox transformation covers the installation of Late Model Restoration’s new 1987-92 28-spline Mustang SVE 5 Lug Conversion Kit on the front of the Fox. Cox chose this new kit to upgrade his current 4 lug brakes to 5 lug, four wheel discs with 13-inch Cobra style Powerslot front rotors, refurbished SN-95 spindles, SVE front calipers and stainless front brake hoses.
TheWith a few tools, some time and mechanical know-how, the guys at Late Model Restoration were able to tear down and remove the Fox’s old front brake assembly, front struts and front spindles. They then equipped the car with an all new ball joint and installed the SVE 5 Lug Conversion Kit.
With the front brakes upgraded, the next step was upgrading the rear brake assembly. The SVE 5 Lug Conversion Kit provides 11.65-inch Powerslot rear rotors, SVE rear calipers, stainless rear brake hoses, E-brake cables, Moser rear axles and a rear caliper flange kit. The kit also comes with two bottles of Royal Purple gear oil, a bottle of friction modifier and two bottles of brake fluid. Again, this upgrade requires proper tools and know-how.
After tearing down the rear axle and rear brakes, the guys at Late Model Restoration were able to install the new brake brackets and rear axles before filling the axle housing with the gear oil and friction modifier. From there, the guys made the appropriate rear brake line modifications, installed the rotors and calipers, and ended the second leg of the project with installing the new E-brake cables.
The final step in Cox’s Fox transformation was installing the master cylinder and adjustable proportioning valve/solid proportioning valve plug included in the kit. Cox chose a ‘93 Cobra master cylinder based on the pedal feel that appealed to him most.
In order to install the new components, the guys had to remove the Fox’s stock master cylinder and “gut” the stock proportioning valve before installing the new solid proportioning valve plug, adding the adjustable proportioning valve and installing the new master cylinder. With everything tied up, brake fluid was added and Cox’s brakes were bled.
With the new SVE 5 Lug Conversion Kit on, Cox’s car has added stopping power and exterior styling. For a more in-depth look at the installation of the kit, be sure to check out the three-part process from the links above and stay tuned as Late Model Restoration brings you driving and track impressions with the new kit in action.
