Just Tuning the BOSS 302 Engine Delivers 20+ RWHP

Some time ago, we covered the track times achieved with a dead stock BOSS 302 Mustang. The special edition pony cranked out a 12.38 at 115 mph on the factory stock tires. Then, after being fitted for a pair of drag radials and feeding the engine with 110 octane go-juice, the BOSS stomped firmly into the elevens, with a 11.72 at 117 mph time slip. Both runs were at Maryland International Raceway.

That BOSS has now spent some time at Maryland-based Woodbine Motorsports and we’ve got some followup numbers from Joseph Jones, Woodbine’s owner. Still in absolutely factory stock condition, with the Pirelli tires back on and regular pump gas back in the tank, a baseline dyno run showed the BOSS turning out 381 RWHP and 340 RWTQ.

Jones relies on SCT for tuning tools and wanted to see just how far the BOSS could be safely taken on just the SCT product. When he was done. he told us, “We have gotten 403/360 with tuning alone. What is more impressive is how much torque and horsepower we have picked up everywhere, not just the max numbers.”

Based on the new 5.0-liter Mustang engine, the BOSS variant delivers 444 horsepower and 380 ft-lb of torque direct from the factory. just as important, it does this with on a broad, flat output curve all the way to the 7,500 rpm redline. Getting 444 horsepower out of the 5.0-liter engine took more than just a warm-over. Pistons, connecting rods, intake manifold, cylinder heads, valve train, rod as well as the main and cam bearings have all been replaced.

Remember, just a few years back, it took a blower to get 390 horsepower out of the 4.6-liter engine. You know, it is sometime said that it’s not what you’ve got, but what you bring to the party. These days, it’s starting to look like this BOSS is a big time Party Animal.
