One of the most impressive cars in all of drag racing just further solidified its status over the weekend with a stunning performance that will truly take one aback when learning of the powerplant that propels it.

John Mihovetz, the sport’s biggest proponent of the under-appreciated and often forgotten Ford Modular engine, has been steadily and tirelessly toiling away at the small block engine combination for years, making steady performance gains season after season that rival engines with cubic inches twice and sometimes even three times its own. Measuring just 281 cubic inches (4.6L), Mihovetz pushed the little engine that could to an incredible 6.055 at 241 mph at the Auto Club Raceway in Pomona over the weekend, where he was competing in Pro Street at the NMCA WEST Lucas Oil West Coast Shootout. According to sources close to the team, the Ford Mustang pushes right around 9 horsepower per cubic inch — or about 2,500 horses — and feeds on 52 pounds of boost as it sails through the lights. The car reportedly crossed the scales at just a little shy of 2,500 pounds, car and driver.

Even more impressive than the mere displacement numbers in this tiny little monster are the parts that Mihovetz is using: an OEM Ford Modular engine block, OEM heads, factory rockers, and more. And at just 281 inches, he’s running nearly as quick as some and quicker than many with entirely aftermarket, 500-plus cubic inch twin-turbo and supercharged engines. This is the true definition of doing a lot with a little, and the fives are right around the corner for this race machine that can only be described as a freak of nature.
