Southeast Asia has proven to be an economic powerhouse in recent years, with countries like India suddenly stocked with a burgeoning middle class with money to spend. And with a middle class comes an even wealthier upper class that demands access to the finer things in life. India, whose infantile auto industry whose only claim to fame is the world’s cheapest car, suddenly finds itself unable to serve high-end customers who want something sleek, fast, and fun.
This has led to a surge in domestically-produced Indian supercars. DC Design has released their first production-intent supercar, called the Avanti…and it’s powered by a Ford EcoBoost engine.
DC Design is headed by a former GM engineer, and so far it has only produced one-off prototypes with pie-in-the-sky aspirations. The Avanti, however, is a production-ready sports car using off-the-shelf parts, among those a Ford-sourced EcoBoost engine. The plan is to build about 300 of these sports cars between 2013 and 2014, and if demand is there, to increase output down the line.
But back to the EcoBoost. The prototype Avanti uses the same 2.0 liter EcoBoost found in the Ford Focus ST and several other Blue Oval vehicles. The engine is mid-mounted, for superior weight distribution, and a small engine sourced from a major OEM will also mean a lower asking price. Could India be the country to make fast, affordable supercars? The asking price will only be around $56,000 which, considering the dearth of sub-$100,000 mid-engine automobiles, is a veritable bargain. Would you rock this Indian-built, EcoBoost-powered supercar?
