The recent announcement by Promedia that the NMRA and NMCA series would be contesting 275 Drag Radial-style classes is already being met with some strong interest from racers, both those already in the game and others joining the 275 fraternity. One of the teams preparing for their initiation is Horsepower Solutions – a high performance automotive shop based in Hampton, Virginia that provides fabrication, dyno tuning, engine building, and other services with plenty of late model Mustang work on their resume.

The guys at HP are hard at work preparing what they’ve coined “Project Sonic Boom”; a 2003 Mustang Mach 1 destined for NMRA and NMCA Drag Radial racing, with some X275 action thrown in for good measure. The team began work on the car in late November and with the season opener just a couple months away, the thrash is on to have the trick new ride ready to hit the quarter mile in Bradenton.
The “Sonic Boom” Mach 1 sports some of the best parts money can buy, including front and rear santhuff shocks, Weld Racing forged wheels, a fabricated rear end housing, K-member system, and rear suspension components courtesy of Racecraft, a third member and disc brakes from Strange Engineering, and a carbonn fiber dash hood, and bumper. The car has already received a complete 25.3 chassis underneath and with all of the suspension components installed, is now on the floor and rolling. Work is ongoing with the interior, as well as all of the wiring and plumbing on what in just a short four months time should be one wicked radial ride when it hits the track in March, and we can’t wait until NMRA Xtreme Drag Radial rolls into the staging lanes in Florida.
