When the Ford Mustang launched in 1964, Ford was hoping to build a sports car for the masses. Little did they know that they had inadvertently created a racing legend. Maybe that was why it wasn’t Ford that took the first Mustangs to the racetrack. Rather, it was a British man assisted by famous tuning house Holman & Moody who entered the Mustang in its first race, the Tour de France Automobile.

Naturally, the Mustang won. To celebrate that all-important victory, Holman & Moody announced last week that it would build and sell a 50th anniversary Tour de France Automobile Edition based on the 2014 Mustang with a nod towards its racing heritage.

In 1964, British racing outfit the Alan Mann Racing Team teamed with Holman & Moody to turn three 289-powered ‘64 Mustangs into race cars. This included bigger brakes, more horsepower, and a racing suspension that allowed the Mustangs to outpace the favored Jaguar Mk IIs, taking home first place. This was the first sanctioned race the Mustang ever won.

To celebrate the upcoming anniversary of this important win, Holman & Moody will offer a 2014 Mustang with similar modifications. This will include Ford Racing products to up the 5.0 liter V8’s horsepower, adjustable shocks and struts from SVT, lowering springs, racing headers, and custom wheels.
