Mazda is apparently thinking of pulling out of the Flat Rock plant where the Mustang is built. If Mazda pulls out and takes the Mazda6 to Japan the Mustang isn’t enough to keep all the workers at the Flat Rock plant employed. Ford and the UAW are at the negotiating table trying to work out something to keep all the workers at the plant.
The plan to keep everyone working may see the Ford Fusion come to Flat Rock to be built alongside the Mustang. The AutoAlliance Flat Rock plant is already down to a single shift. Without another vehicle that can be built at the plant, there is a chance that Ford would have to shed 1,763 workers. The hope is that some new trim levels for the Fusion can be placed at Flat Rock to fix the situation.
A new generation of the Fusion is set to be unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show in January and some of the expected new Fusion trims could be built seen on the Lincoln MKZ hinting that perhaps Fusion and MKZ models could be built in Flat Rock. The plan sounds likely since the plant where the Fusion is made now in Mexico is running three shifts and is building all it can build. If plans fell through and the Flat Rock plant had to be closed, I wonder where production of the Mustang would go.
