The Ford Motor Company has faced a long, hard road to recovery after narrowly avoiding bankruptcy by mortgaging everything, even its logo, in an effort to shore up cash. But the efforts of Alan Mulally and other executives have paid off, helping Ford win back credibility in the eyes of car buyers and leading to the launch of some of Ford’s best cars ever. And the automaker has the sales data to prove it.

Yesterday Ford announced that it had just posted its best July U.S. sales since 2006, just before America entered a downward economic period known as the Great Recession. Sales were up some 5% last month, and Ford continues to make record average transaction prices, spurred in large part to its new truck, van and SUV offerings.

Last month Ford F-Series sales also had its best July sales since 2006, which is no surprise given how heavily the Blue Oval leans on truck sales for profits. Yet Ford’s line of commercial vans, the Transit and Transit Connect, are doing great as well, posting their best sales month since 2000 as buyers have become eager for the versatility of European-style utility vans.

Unsurprisingly though, it’s Ford’s line of SUVs that are seeing the biggest sales increases, as the new Explorer has seen sales rise 27% compared to last year. The Ford Edge also saw a 17% increase in sales over July of 2014, and even the Ford Escape had its sales tally increase by some 10% this year. All told, Ford’s SUV sales have set a record pace, though the redesigned 2015 Mustang has seen its best sales month since 2008, finally eclipsing the long-dominant Chevy Camaro in the muscle car wars. Even Ford’s long-neglected Lincoln brand is making headway, with its best June sales month in a decade led largely by sales of its new or redesigned SUVs.

In other words, Ford’s big risk has paid off in a big way.
