Holy limited numbers Mustang fans. If you’re one of the few who are financially well off enough to even plan on buy an all new Shelby GT350, you may need to dig into your pockets a little deeper. That’s because Ford has just announced that they will build a very limited run of the all new Mustang variant as a 2015 model.
Early adopters will be fighting over only 100 units built of the standard GT350. Half of those will receive the technology package which includes Magneride dampers, navigation system, Sync 3, and other premium Ford goodies. The other half will get the GT350’s track package which adds additional cooling for the engine oil, differential and transmission, as well as upgraded Mageneride dampers.
It’s all about honoring the nameplate’s 50th anniversary which is happening this year. 50 years ago, Ford introduced Carroll Shelby and his vision for the Mustang to the world. It’s fitting that there’s going to be a ’15 GT350 to commemorate the occasion.
If you’re salivating like we were about the prospects of getting your hands on a GT350R, the 2015 model will be a true collectible. Ford is planning to build just 37 of these to pay homage to the original GT350 competition models. It is rumored that Shelby produced either 34 or 35 of these cars originally, along with two prototypes. As such, Ford is only selling 37 new GT350R’s for 2015 to honor the car’s 50th anniversary.
If this has you in an emotional twist -fear not. Ford is doing this limited run of 2015 VIN numbers to commemorate the GT350 name’s 50th anniversary. Once they run through these first 137 cars, production will switch to the 2016 VIN. This special run of 2015 models will undoubtedly increase the future collector value of those cars, and we doubt any of them will end up seeing track duty, more likely, they’ll be stashed away in private collections for the next 50 years. “Fans of the Shelby brand are among the most passionate in the automotive industry,” said Henry Ford III, Ford Performance marketing manager. “To honor the passion of our fans for Shelby GT350’s 50th anniversary, a limited run of GT350 models will be built in 2015; these cars will be highly coveted by both Mustang and Shelby enthusiasts alike.”
For those of us hoping to see the GT350 and R model raced in anger, we need only to wait until the 2016 run starts, and hope that many of those cars find owners who are willing to make Carroll proud.
No word yet on when the cars will go on sale, but we’ll let you know as soon as Ford releases more information.
