When it first came out, the $150,000 Ford GT was the most expensive production car the Blue Oval ever built. Many of these cars were snapped up as quickly as they could be built, and while some were left stock and put away in garages, many more were sent off to tuning shops for some over-the-top modifications. Turbochargers, bigger engines, full suspension systems and more were common modifications on this supercharged supercar from Ford.
Unfortunately, the best laid plans don’t always pan out. Ray Hofman took his Ford GT to Bill Knobloch of Discovery Automotive, reports Autoblog, for some modifications. While Bill was driving the GT, he lost control and wound up wrecking the exotic, much to Ray’s chagrin. They are now embroiled in a bitter battle over what exactly happened.
Bill claims that he had taken the GT out to test some of the modifications he made, namely a twin-turbo system, but not before insisting Ray give him a copy of the registration and insurance. A wise move, as it turns out. Bill claims was driving down the highway at 65 mph in the right hand lane when he inexplicably lost control of the car, which went airborne through some trees and eventually wound up at the bottom of a ravine. Bill was hospitalized but mostly unhurt, though the car was another story. As you can see from the pictures, it is a deflated wreck.
Ray claims that Bill’s accident was not “inexplicable”, but a result of rash driving and abuse that resulted in the accident. The spot where Bill crashed, Ray claims, was a popular local “drag strip”, and that the scene of the accident included skid marks, broken tree branches 20-30 feet up the tree, and that the point of impact was 60-70 feet from the road itself. If true, then the car was likely going a lot faster than the 65 mph claimed by Bill.
It is a sad turn of events for an awesome car, though luckily nobody was seriously hurt. What the truth is, we don’t know, and while it may be easy to say “It’s just a car”, that car belong to somebody who cared very deeply for her. At least he had insurance.
