It’s hard to imagine a modern America without the Ford Mustang. If Ford were to suddenly kill the famous pony car, a roar of rage would erupt from coast to coast. Luckily, the Blue Oval has no such intentions for the foreseeable future. The same could not be said for the Australian-built Falcon, however, which was put on the chopping block as Ford moved forward with its global “One Ford” unification plan.
Luckily, reports CarAdvice.au, the Falcon and its platform mates have received a stay of execution for the next five years.
Ford Australia has always had its own take on automobiles, and has been led by the large Falcon sedan, which underpins Utes and SUV’s as well. Ford has made it no secret that it plans to marry all of its automobiles to a handful of several “global” vehicle platforms. This includes the Falcon, which was seen as being cutoff due to its large size and poor fuel economy.
An injection of $103 million into the Falcon platform, however, has guaranteed that the Falcon will continue to be built through at least 2016. Beyond that, the Falcon will probably be forced onto a smaller, more fuel efficient global platform. For now though, that money will be used to introduce a six-speed automatic transmission and new engine technology to improve performance and fuel economy. Just don’t hold your breath for any American Falcon, as this all but seals the fate of Oz’s favorite performance sedan.
