We write a lot about the Ford Mustang because, quite frankly, there is a lot to write about the big bad muscle car from the Blue Oval. The Mustang might have some competition coming up through the ranks of its own brand though. The new Ford Fiesta has only just gone on sale in the U.S., but it is already making quite a commotion in the racing world.
According to AutoBlog’s coverage of this weekend’s X Games 16, the Fiesta dominated the rally racing portion of the festivities, grabbing 1st and 2nd place victories in both events.
To be fair, the Auto Blog article makes it sound as though there was a lot of confusion on the field. This is understandable given America’s relative estrangement from rally racing, as well as the removal of navigators from the passenger’s seat, replaced by ESPN announcers. This caused many of the cars and drivers to go off course, resulting in disqualification. In the first Rally event, Tanner Foust won by default when fellow Ford driver Brian Deegan went off course.
The Super Rally event sounded much more eventful, and indeed it was the first such event put on here in the U.S. It consisted of two loops, one inside the arena and one outside. Ken Block experienced engine troubles and was unable to make it to the final heat. Ford would be well represented on the champions’ block though, as Tanner Foust again finished first, followed by (again) Brian Deegan. The Mustang better watch out; the Fiesta is proving one tough tiny car.
