After a brief quiet period, it appears that the next Shelby GT500 might be getting a little closer to a public reveal, as the imagery is once again flowing. The biggie comes courtesy of an old-guard motoring publication that offers an overhead view of the halo Mustang, along with a new spy shot of the test mule’s camo-free front end.
Little is officially released about this car, but thanks to a deluge leaks and a few official nuggets from Ford, we know it will be the most powerful street-legal Ford yet, and now we are getting a better view of its aggressive looks courtesy of the July 2018 cover of Motor Trend, leaked in advance of its on-sale date via an Instagram story. We can’t tell from this image if the story has real info, or it is making educated guesses like the rest of us, but that shot sure looks representative of the camo’d cars and the glimpses in the teaser video below.
“Loaded with the most venom ever, the all-new Mustang Shelby GT500 with its 700-plus horsepower supercharged V8 will be the most powerful street-legal production Ford ever,” Ford said when it teased the car. “Embodying Ford Performance team’s motorsport expertise, this new Mustang is engineered to stand apart on roadways and race tracks, thanks to its new innovative track technologies, performance hardware, plus aggressive and functional track-tuned styling.”
That ‘track-tuned’ styling is more apparent in the first fully exposed cover shot. It reveals the aggressive hood vents hinted at in the various camo’d spy shots. We also get a look at the huge rear wing that we suspect will provide the downforce to plant the rear tires at over 200 MPH.
“Arriving in 2019, the all-new Mustang Shelby GT500 will be the pinnacle of Mustang performance, highlighting the innovation, ingenuity and passion of Ford Performance,” said the teaser video description. “With more than 700 horsepower projected, the supercharged V8 Mustang Shelby GT500 will be the most powerful street-legal production Ford ever, and twice as powerful as the original 1967 Mustang performance model.”
Based on a variety of leaked images, we have a strong hunch an Eaton 2650 TVS-supercharged 5.2-liter engine might just provide that 750-plus horsepower. And, a dual-clutch transmission and maybe more could back that potent powerplant.
Suffice it to say the next GT500 is shaping up to be the most aggressive variant of the S550 platform to date and from this latest batch of images we are getting a clearer image of just how good the next snake will look on the street.
