Edelbrock is a company with one of the strongest reputations in the automotive aftermarket industry. When Edelbrock comes out with a new product line, engine builders and racers take note. This is the case with their newest line of cylinder heads that are designed and built specifically for professional engine builders and head porters.

Edelbrock’s Pro-Port RAW and Semi-Finished Cylinder Heads are based upon the company’s hugely popular Edelbrock Victor Series of CNC cylinder heads. However, the Victor Series heads are basically ready to use straight from the box, although a little “massaging” by the builder will allow them to perform a little better.

Like all Edelbrock cylinder heads, these are also cast in the United States at the company’s state of the art Edelbrock Foundry. The most noticeable difference between these heads and the rest of Vic’s lineup is that these ones are completely unported. They’re cast with extra thick walls that allow mild or wild CNC porting.

These are the only cylinder heads that are designed specifically to accommodate just about any location, shape, or size of CNC port. Due to the extra thickness designed into the heads, builders and professional porters can port in a wide variety of port dimensions to give the flow effect they desire.

Edelbrock Casts These Heads Using A Special Process That Gives Them Extra Strength

Most of the Edelbrock Pro-Port RAW and Semi-FInished heads are approved for either NASCAR or the NHRA, or both.

Edelbrock’s advertising says that some of their Pro-Port RAW Heads are cast using their special HIP Casting Process. This process causes the finished heads to be incredibly strong and super dense. This extra strength and density gives them three times the fatigue life of competing heads and a consistency that approaches billet aluminum.  In other words, you’re not going to have to worry about problems with the heads that are caused by faulty castings or design.

What, exactly is this HIP Process though? The HIP casting process was originally devised for the aircraft industry, an industry where extreme strength and reliability is exceedingly important. HIP stands for Hot Isostatic Pressing.

LS-Pro-Port-HeadsRaw castings are placed in a chamber that is slowly heated up to 900 degrees Fahrenheit. As the temperature in the chamber is increased, the chamber is also pressurized. Pressures inside the chamber can reach as high as 30,000 PSI. Temperature and pressure are then held steady for a length of time. This allows the casting to be compressed and results in the incredible strength and density mentioned above.

18-Degree-Pro-Port-RawGiving engine builders and head porters even more flexibility, most Edelbrock Pro-Port RAW and Semi-Finished Cylinder Heads are shipped with heavy duty seats and manganese-bronze valve guides in the box, but not installed.

It  must be noted that this line of cylinder heads requires pretty extensive preparation before they can be installed. Edelbrock recommends that you seek out the services of a professional cylinder head porter after you receive them.
