After unveiling the new 2016 Mustang Cobra Jet at the SEMA Show last month, Ford Racing didn’t waste much time in delivering the goods to the waiting public, as evidenced by one of the 50 limited-run cars already springing up for sale on eBay this week.
The new Cobra Jets are the very first to be based on the new S550 platform, which began with the 2015 model Mustang. The end result is, if you ask us, the sleekest, raciest version of the Cobra Jet yet. This one, which is currently sitting at the Ford of Murfreesboro dealership in Tennessee, is the first car we’ve seen other than the dark blue model that Ford showed off at SEMA and in their media materials.
This particular car, which they’re offering up at a buy-it-now price of $103,980, packs a 5.0-liter mill with a 2.9-liter Whipple supercharger, and has all the promised goods, from the 8.50-cert roll cage, the three-speed automatic transmission, Strange Engineering drivetrain components, an Aeromotive fuel system, Weld Racing wheels, and a whole laundry list of other top-flight parts and pieces. They’ve also optioned the Cobra Jet signature graphics and the wheelie bar on this car.
Notably, the Cobra Jet is the only production 2015-16 Ford Mustang with a solid rear axle and 4-link rear suspension setup — all of the road-going vehicles on the S550 platform utilize an independent rear suspension design, which is more suited to cornering than straight-line, drag strip performance.
Ford Racing is marketing these cars as 8-second, turnkey racing machines, and as we’ve seen in years past, with some additional work in the engine department, these cars will go DEEP into the eights at over 160 mph. Beyond the intended NHRA Stock and Super Stock ranks, one can jump into a range of other classes with the NMRA, NMCA, PSCA, or other venues with these cars and be competitive right off the bat.
While a final price of over $104,000 is pretty steep, if you weren’t one of the lucky 50 people to get their name on the list to receive a 2016 CJ, then this is your opportunity to put the baddest car in town in your garage.
