Back in the day (that makes us feel so old!) it wasn’t possible to just open up the internet and pick out your favorite Fox-body Mustang parts from any number of retailers to be delivered at your door by the end of the week. Instead, you had to wait until the next issue of your favorite rag showed up in the mail and hope for the best. There weren’t 40 separate cylinder head castings for the Mustang, or dozens of wheel designs or header packages – the market was a vastly different place in the mid-to-late ’80’s. In fact, at that point in time, Ford Racing’s GT40 cylinder heads were still in the development phase at the hands of Brian Wolfe and other Ford engineers.
Then you had guys like Steve Saleen, who was in the business of road-racing and constructing some of the very first Saleen Mustangs. one of which is this 1988 “R” Model Saleen that’s now up for sale on ebay. According to the seller, the #21R car was driven by Rick Titus, Calvin Fish, and George Follmer in SCCA competition. The SCCA logbook along with many other extras are part of the sale – including the original racing seat and original set of 8-inch wheels with General “G” tires, and even the original Saleen title.
This particular car has been stored in a climate-controlled facility for a number of years and appears to be in excellent condition. The question is, do you think it’s worth the Buy It Now price of $65,000? If so, this could be one of the most expensive Fox Mustangs we’ve seen in quite some time – but it’s also a piece of late-model Mustang history that deserves to be taken care of and kept in a collection the way it has been up until now. More history and photos are available at the link – check it out.
What say you – is this piece of history worth the squeeze? Sound off in the comments below!
