We could go on and on about the virtues regarding the classic Mustangs of yesteryear, from their timeless styling to the variety of engine choices offered in this pony car. One thing we could not brag about, however, were the safety features, which were few and far between. Thankfully, safety as well as power has increased in modern muscle cars exponentially, allowing even drunken idiots to survive a brush with death.
That was the case outside of Charlotte, North Carolina, where WBTV reports that a drunk driver piloting a Ford Mustang got on to I-77 traveling southbound on the northbound lane, eventually colliding with a tractor trailer. Remarkably, the driver survived, and is now facing drunk driving charges, among others.
From the looks of it, the drunk driver was behind the wheel of a S197 Mustang, likely prior to the 2010 facelifted model. And it is a good thing too, as S197 Mustangs have a 5-out-of-5 star frontal crash test rating from the IIHS. Even with that rating though, both the Mustang and the tractor trailer it collided with suffered extensive damage.
Somehow though, the driver of the Mustang was ejected from the car and had only non-life threatening injuries. It never ceases to amaze us how idiots seem to find a way to survive the accidents they cause. In the case of this wrong-way mishap, perhaps the driver should send a thank you letter to Ford for building such a safe sports car. For the rest of you, let this be a lesson; don’t get on the wrong highway ramp.
