Q-Code, R-Code and K-Code – what do all of these mean, you may be asking? Well, they play a part that’s important in the Mustang world. These codes are tongue for deciphering a Mustang’s VIN number, and identifying certain Mustang models for their engine combination. Take for example, this 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1 we found while browsing none other than Craigslist. This particular Mustang can be identified as a Q-Code car. If you’re wondering how, it’s a rather simple endeavor. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN) serve the purpose of helping you identify a specific vehicle’s “build sheet” if you will. Here’s an example of that. The engine code in a VIN, which is the fifth digit of that number usually, tells us that this “Q” decoding means this Mustang is powered by a non-Ram Air 428 cubic-inch Cobra Jet engine.
Now that we know what this classic Mustang is powered by, and how to identify that portion of the VIN, let’s dive into the details of the car. This Mach 1 was originally painted Silver Jade, one of your author’s favorite classic Mustang colors, but is now finished in Jet Black and has been color sanded and buffed. According to the ad, the current owner has owned the car in California since 1982, and has recently completed a full restoration on this Mustang. The owner explains that the car was completely disassembled and sandblasted down to the bare metal, and that the chassis is completely clean and free of rust. There’s a lot more to this Mustang than the scope of this segment, however. If you’re in the market for what looks to be a perfect example of a 1969 Q-Code Mustang Mach 1, checkout the original ad here for more info on the car.
