With the Boss 302 in the hands of more owners now, there are more drivers taking to the track in their new cars. Some of these drivers are running into issues with the Boss 302 getting too hot on the track at higher ambient air temperatures and going into limp mode until they cool down. A company called Cool Tech LLC has looked at the issue with the Boss 302 cars and decided that one thing that leads to overheating is the fact that the oil cooler that comes on the Boss cars is liquid cooled.
The problem is that the 220F water is trying to cool oil that is likely to be in the area of 270F itself. There is not enough of a heat difference to adequately cool the oil in Cool Tech LLC’s opinion. The company has set about designing a replacement oil cooler that uses air to cool the oil rather than water. The kit also replaces the odd hose on the bottom of the radiator of stock Boss 302 cars where the water is routed to the factory oil cooler. The company promises that the new oil cooler will take some of the stress off the coolant system by removing a restriction in the radiator hose and by cooling the oil more than the factory cooler is capable of.
The oil in the car acts not only as lubrication for moving parts, it also acts as a coolant system as well. The Cool Tech LLC Boss 302 oil cooler isn’t ready to ship just yet, but the company is working hard on it. The company says that the new cooler increases oil capacity to 9.7 quarts instead of the factory 8.5 quart system. The kit is being designed to work not only in the Boss 302, but also in the normal 5.0 GT cars and the Boss 302 Laguna Seca cars with more bracing in the front. Prototype kits are currently being track tested. A kit for the Boss 302 LS cars will also include an oil temperature gauge that replaced the performance gauge in the dash pod.
