For Brandon Kozubski, working with Mustangs is just second nature. As we’ve heard so many times before, it is a love that is passed on from Father to son. He explains, “My dad had an ’87 that he set up to do autocross with the SCCA. I would sit around in the garage while he worked on it, or would hold something for him to bolt on.”
The object of that work was replaced with a 1986 Mustang when the family returned from a two year stay in England. Rust was the reason and the pair took the time to swap all the good parts out to the replacement car, which was still intended for autocross use. In addition, the ’86 was updated with a mass-air conversion and a Kenny Brown tubular K-member.
By the time the Pony was roadworthy, Brandon was old enough to drive as well, so a new age of competition began as he would go to SCCA meets along with his Dad to do some racing. That, as it turns out, was a challenge for the motor, which had previous work done before the family originally took possession.
After figuring out that overly tight rockers and bent pushrods weren’t a good omen, they considered several options. In the end, a Cobra driveline swap won out and Justin’s Performance Center in Millersville, MD, was enlisted to help out with the swap. The donor parts were sourced through MPS Salvage and Brandon had asked for the Cobra dashboard as well.
He’s hoping for a custom look inside as well as under the hood, though it may take a little vision to see past the current state. JPC has had the car for several months now and Brandon is hoping that they’ll be ready to give it back around the end of April. From there, putting the interior back together and painting the car should be enough to get it back on the road in time for summer cruising and perhaps an SCCA event or two.
There is no doubt that things are going to be a lot different for this Fox when its time to take on the cones and, when it comes to family activities, I just can’t think of a better one for a Father and son to get involved with. We can’t wait to see this particular Fox when its back on the road.
