Coastal Dyno’s Sam Lippencott recently added a ProCharger D-1SC supercharger kit to his 2015 Mustang GT, upping the car’s horsepower output to over 700-rwhp. You can read about that here. With the increased horsepower, elapsed times have greatly decreased to the mid 10-second range. And of course, you know what that means–if Lippencott wants to make legal passes at the drag strip, the car needs a roll bar.
Like many Mustang fans in Florida, Lippencott took his 2015 GT down to TigVision Race Fabrications in West Palm Beach, Florida, where TigVision’s David Dodge installed the 6-point roll bar in the car. When it comes to 2005-’14 Mustangs, Dodge has all the measurements, but he tells us all his roll bars and cages are custom.
With Lippencott’s 2015, Dodge says, “The 2015 is narrower inside, and where the bends need to be is different, as well.”
The bar Dodge installed in Lippencott’s car truly is a custom roll bar. It has swing out door bars featuring carbon fiber covers to keep the bars from getting scraped upon entry and exit. The swing outs also use billet clevis-style mounts for increased safety.
In the process of installing the bar, the 2015’s interior was completely removed save for the dash. Dodge used mandrel-bent, 1 ¾-inch chromoly tubing in this application, with–you guessed it–TIG-welded construction.
As far as how Dodge installs and paints the roll bar, “I get everything built, cut, and notched, then I paint the bar outside of the car. As tight as it is against the headliner, it would be impossible to paint it inside the car,” Dodge says. A TigVision trademark, Dodge rolls the tubing to form the same shape as the 2015’s headliner.
With all the work that goes into a roll bar install, we’re sure you’re wondering how long Dodge will have your Mustang in his shop? “Generally, it takes me 3-4 days to do a roll bar,” Dodge says. “As tight as the roll bar is in the car it takes a little bit longer to do.”
Increased safety is worth the 3-4 days without your Mustang, we think, along with keeping track tech inspectors out of your face.
