Most of you reading this likely missed your chance to buy an original Shelby Mustang back when they were brand new (if you were even alive back then.) It’s incredible to think that 40 years ago, you could buy a brand new Shelby for less than five thousand dollars. These days, any legit car with the Shelby name is easily worth six figures, and the chances of finding and buying an original depend entirely on the depths of your pockets.
Buy why buy an old original, when you can have something brand new and a whole lot better? Mustangs Daily reports that Classic Recreations, the only shop licensed by Carroll Shelby to build officially licensed replicas of classic Shelbys, has announced a new model, the Shelby GT350CR. But underneath the classic bodywork is a much more modern engine.
Classic Recreations has been busy this year, first announcing the Shelby GT500CR Venom and then a convertible version of the GT500 CR. But aside from a slightly lower stance, and bigger wheels, Classic Recreation’s take on the 1965-66 Shelby GT350 looks just like the original. That’s because it uses as a base an original 1965-66 fastback Mustang, before setting about putting their own touches to the car. Under the hood you won’t find a HiPo 289 engine, but rather a modern 427 cubic inch powerplant cranking out 545 horsepower.
The engine is fuel-injected and backed by a Tremec 5-speed manual transmission. An optional aluminum block is a $4,000 option, but the loss of weight over the front wheels will immensely improve handling, along with a full suspension and brake system that puts the original to shame. An optional twin-turbo system will pump out over 1,000 horsepower, and is only a $9,000 option on top of the $119,000 base price. You may not have an authentic, original Shelby from the days of yore, but you’ll be a helluva lot faster, that is for sure.
