The NMRA’s Super Stang class is challenging from a number of perspectives, most importantly that the competitors don’t qualify as a traditional race class would – they dial their own ET on Sunday morning prior to the first round of eliminations. In addition, the class runs on a .500 Pro Tree and is randomly paired for the first round of competition, with the second rounds laddered based on reaction time performance from round one.
2012 class Champion Chad Wendel of Portland, Indiana, has a pretty solid handle on what it takes to perform in this unique class, and had a great showing this past weekend at the Atlanta Dragway stop on the 2014 NMRA tour.
Wendel is sponsored by driveline products company Moser Engineering and uses their products exclusively on his 2007 Mustang. Four rounds of competition on Sunday had him working towards the final round by eliminating Steven Phillips in the first round, Nick Basilisco in the second round, and longtime racer Larry Firestone in the semifinal.
In the final round, Wendel faced off against tough competitor Lloyd Mikeska, who had won over perennial Top Ten racer Miles Wagoner, Marvin Knack, and Rockin’ Al Miller in the semifinal to earn his final-round spot.
Wendel didn’t leave anything to chance, closing the door on Mikeska on the starting line by clipping off a .005 reaction time before crossing the finish line with a 12.194 elapsed time on his 12.15 dial-in.
Wendel also took home the Super Stang class win at the NMRA’s season-opening Florida event over fellow Indiana resident Kent Nine, making his Georgia win the bookend in a two-for-two to start the season.
