The rumor mill is once again swirling with details regarding the 2015 Mustang. Our friends over at Mustang6g.com have purchased the latest spy photos and analyzed them. They also were kind enough to give us access and permission to run a couple here, and ask that you head over to the Mustang6g site to see the rest of them.
So what makes these photos of a camouflaged Mustang so special? It’s minor differences that show up in the camouflage, and the wheels that give this car away. This is no ordinary Mustang, this is likely the SVT version of the upcoming S550 platform, or at the least some sort of special edition that is more track oriented.
Let’s begin with the obvious, the wheels, tires and brakes. The spy photos clearly show some massive brakes, we’re thinking at least 14 inches in diameter and the rotors are cross-drilled. Add to that the visible likely six-piston calipers, and it becomes clear this prototype is packing serious stopping power. For obvious reasons the wheels are also different to allow for the meatier brakes and the tires are beefier as well.
This particular car is sporting quad exhaust tips, also not camouflaged, and Mustang6g reports that the car had a very nice rumble to it. Currently the only production Mustang to sport quad tips is the GT500, which makes us wonder is this a new GT500, the rumored GT350, Cobra, or something else?
Then there’s the scoops. The camouflage has been altered on the front of the car from what we’ve previously seen. There’s a mesh panel on the hood, and if you look closely you can clearly see an intake scoop. We doubt the engineers would have gone to the trouble to feed fresh air to a non-functional duct. That also brings us to the mesh panels on the fenders of this Mustang. We must again assume these are functional if they went through the trouble to wrap this car in different camouflage than the others. This could be functional brake cooling or functional ducting to pull more heat from the engine compartment.
We reported yesterday that the new Mustang will feature a host of new tech. We can be certain that the My Ford Touch system will make it’s way to the car, and there will be other tech likely as well. Mustang 6g has photos showing the disguised interior of the car, including a steering wheel sporting additional buttons that would be necessary for those high-tech systems.
The last give away is not in the photos themselves but in where they were taken. This car was spotted not going into the various test labs that many of the other prototypes have been seen driving to, but to SVT. It would seem that the skunk-works is hard at it, and perhaps the S550 Mustang will debut with several packages ready to go on sale rather than the wait that we’d previously heard rumors of. Ford may be preparing it’s next salvo in the muscle car wars, getting ready to unleash both barrels on the competition at once. We’ll have to wait for the true reveal to be certain, until then head over to Mustang6g, enjoy the pictures, and let us know your thoughts as well.
