In the Ford and Mustang arena, one of the more popular activities among enthusiasts is engine swaps; be it later model 4.6 and 5.4 modulars being installed in early model Fox bodies, in earlier SN95’s, and other concoction of car and engine that one can dream up.
With the release of the new 5.0L Coyote powerplant last year to rave reviews, they too have become the source of a steady stream of swaps in older model cars. Because hey, who doesn’t get at least a mild kick out of successfully dropping a drivetrain into something it wasn’t meant for and creating some chatter from onlookers? Or better yet, who doesn’t want perhaps the best engine that Ford has ever produced for the Mustang in their Fox body?
The crew at Blow By Racing recently kicked off a 5.0L Coyote-powered Fox body project build that upon completion will be raced in the NMRA. The ’89 GT Hatchback will be powered by a BBR-built forged Coyote short block featuring forged pistons, rods, and crank, and will retain the stock 4V Coyote cylinder heads and camshafts. The powerplant will then be fed by a ProCharger F-1A supercharger.
The modern engine replacement will be paired with a BBR “Jackal” return style fuel system, with the fueling and electronics systems controlled by an OEM Ford computer with a Ford Racing pack tuned with software from SCT.
Transferring the power is a race-built Powerglide transmission mated to a 4,000 RPM stall converter, and assisting in getting the torque and power to the ground consistently will be a combination of upgraded suspension components from Steeda, UPR, and BMR Fabrication.
Zeilinga has promised a steady flow of updates on this rather interesting Fox body buildup as the project moves toward completion. Along with that, a complete guide of the necessary fabrication work and aftermarket parts and part numbers to make such an engine swap possible will be provided for those interested in undertaking a similar project themselves.
