Despite the protests of the Ford faithful, by 2016 the Blue Oval will no longer manufacture cars in the Land Down Under. Ford Australia will instead be a car importer, selling the same vehicles that the rest of the world gets. That mean’s Ford Australia’s unique lineup, including the legendary four-door, rear-drive Falcon performance lineup, will be no more.
The cuts are already starting to come in, and the first division to go is Ford Performance Vehicles, or FPV. The Age reports that FPV is the first on the chopping block, and that sometime in 2014 the speed-centric division will be no more.
Founded in 2002, FPV has created some incredibly delicious cars, including the 450 horsepower Falcon GT. Next year Ford will roll out the final version of the Falcon, which along with Australian manufacturing, will be phased out by 2016. The FPV division will go the way of the dodo, though Ford is said to be reviving the XR8 badge for the last few years of the Falcon.
And after 2016? Rumors indicate that the Ford Mustang will be coming to Australia for the first time (officially at least), meaning right-hand drive versions of the Mustang will be available. Ford will become a car importer to Australia, and under the One Ford plan Australia will sell cars that are sold globally, from America to New Zealand.
So long FPV; too bad we never got a Falcon of our own.
