Here’s a teaser from when we attended the GT350 Track Attack program at Buttonwillow Raceway.

As many of us know, there are numerous formidable and unique aspects to the all-new Shelby GT350. A 5.2-liter V8 engine utilizing a flat-plane crankshaft dubbed the ‘Voodoo engine’ by Ford powers both the Shelby GT350 and the GT350R. The engine is appropriately backed by a Tremec TR-3160 6-speed manual transmission.

There’s good reason for why the pair of Shelby Mustangs use a Tremec transmission, one that is specific to only the GT350 and GT350R. This exclusive Shelby Mustang uses a modified version of the Tremec transmission which is found in cars such as the sixth-gen Camaro SS and the ’13+ Cadillac ATS, only this version has been altered to meet the demands of the flat-plane crank engine and its rev-happy high-RPM capability.

Meet the most advanced 6-speed manual transmission from Tremec to date.

Double- and triple- cone synchronizers feature hybrid and sintered bronze-friction material and are the same size as the ones used in the Tremec TR-6060 6-speed manual and Tremec says this is extremely beneficial because “the greater the friction surface, the easier the transmission is to shift.”

And like most modern transmissions nowadays, the TR-3160 also features an integrated ‘reverse-inhibiting solenoid system’ which prevents shifting into reverse when the vehicle is moving forward at 3 MPH or more. So what does this translate to in terms of driving experience?
