Want to buy an expensive car? Find one with the word “Shelby” at the front. What began as a niche automobile for speed enthusiasts became a world-class car company thanks to countless successes both on the track, and in the showroom. There are two cars in particular that bear the Shelby name that are more famous (and costly) than others; the original Shelby Cobra and the Mustang-based GT350.
While we’ve seen a lot of expensive Shelbys, this might be the most expensive GT350 we’ve laid eyes on. And naturally, it’s for sale by Nevada Classics.
The Shelby GT350 is no lightweight in the auction world, regularly drawing six figures from eager bidders looking to complete their car collection. A cursory glance of Hemmings Auto Blog’s classified pages reveals that, depending on the car and its history, a nicely restored GT350 can go for between $85,000 and $300,000 easily. But the price on this particular GT350 is over $1.15 million. Why? What makes it so special? What is historically significant about this car?
As it turns out, this is one of three 1965 Shelby GT350’s that was modified and driven as part of the Carroll Shelby School of High Performance Driving, now the Bob Bondurant Driving School. Behind the wheel sat some of the most famous names in racing, and this particular car is heavily modified for track duty. It’s been restored to Concours condition, and is one of just two survivors from the track days. Small modifications can make a big difference down the road in value, but it’s the history of this car, more than anything, that makes it a million dollar automobile. Do you agree?
