The NMRA has proudly announced that AFCO Racing, one of the leading manufacturers of drag racing suspension components, has signed on to sponsor the series’ highly anticipated new Xtreme Drag Radial class through 2013. The Drag Radial category will take on an entirely new face as the 2011 season opens in Florida in March. The class, which has been restricted to BFGoodrich and Nitto radial tires since its inception in the early 2000’s, now encompasses an all new set of rules targeted at the increasing popularity of X275 and other 275 radial racing around the country. In following the market as they have, the NMRA is expected to see increased car counts and even more excitement in what has long been one of the most popular categories in all of drag racing.
The NMRA’s AFCO Xtreme Drag Radial class will limit racers to 302, 351, and 4.6L/5.4L modular engines measuring up to 450 cubic inches, with weight breaks for combinations utilizing single turbo, centrifugally supercharged, and nitrous oxide power adders, in addition to naturally aspirated combos. The class will be limited to ’79 and newer Ford Fox body and Ford powered vehicles using a street-type DOT Drag Radial tire, designated as 275/60/15 for most popular brands and 295/65/15 for BFGoodrich. Natrually aspirated cars will be allowed the use of a 28.0″ x 10.5″ slick tire to make things a little more interesting. This of course is a full stock-type suspension category. Quarter mile elapsed times are expected to be in high seven second range, and the battle should be intense.
