A Look Behind the Curtain At the Development of the New Ford GT

It only took a little over a year for a design team at Ford to come up with the Ford GT and have it ready to debut at the Detroit 2015 North American International Auto Show. That’s even faster than lightspeed for the automotive industry which usually takes a minimum of three years to go from concept to Auto Show entrant.

Reaction to the car at the auto show was good and Ford says they’re pleased with the feedback they’ve received. Much of that feedback centered around people wanting to see more of the car. To meet that demand, Ford’s put together a “behind-the-scenes” video of the development and design of the Ford GT, showing the story behind the creation of the supercar.

Ford put together an all-star team of designers for the all-new Ford GT. The task began in November of 2013 when a small team of talented designers began the awesome task of creating what would become the fourth generation successor to Ford’s GT40. The work took place in absolute secrecy at Ford’s Dearborn design studio.

Beauty and functionality were asked of every design element with a focus on a design that was both lightweight and efficient. A demand for hyper aerodynamic performance relentlessly drove the design process over a 14 month period. When they were done, it was clear that a supercar that was thoroughly modern and still had clear Ford GT bloodlines had been born.

The new Ford GT is filled with technology and innovation. For example, it’s equipped with a next-gen 3.5-liter Ecoboost twin-turbo V6. This V6 engine that is projected to put out more than 600 horses can be read about in an earlier Ford Social post
