Did you want to get your hands on one of the 500 Ford GTs being built over the next two years? Well too bad. The Ford GT is officially sold out for now, as Ford sent out more than 6,000 rejection letters to would-be buyers. But if all that you’re really after is the GT’s 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6, which produces an estimated 600 horsepower, then you may still be in luck.

In an interview with AutoCar, chief of Ford Performance Dave Pericak hinted that the 600 horsepower EcoBoost motor could be offered to applicants outside of the GT. Pericak hinted at its usage in other racing series, as well as by small boutique carmakers.

Ford already has a number of similar setups with outfits like Cosworth, which get bulk deals on crate motors before massaging them to sing at even higher power levels. The 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine, for example, was used to power the Radical SR3 street racer, and the 1.6-liter EcoBoost powers Britain’s Formula Ford racing series. And of course there’s the venerable 5.0-liter Coyote V8, which is being tapped to power all sorts of boutique builds, including the revival of TVR.

With all that taken into consideration, it seems likely that the 3.5-liter EcoBoost in its 600 horsepower state of tune will be offered up as an aftermarket option as well. Now that doesn’t mean you’ll be able to call up Ford and order one shipped to your house, necessarily, but it does mean that the engine won’t be entirely exclusive to the 500 Ford GT buyers the Blue Oval has already selected.
